Asim Abbasi
Asim Abbasi is a distinguished Pakistani-British film director, screenwriter, and producer, celebrated for his innovative storytelling and significant contributions to contemporary South Asian cinema. Educated at Karachi Grammar School, the London School of Economics (LSE), and SOAS, Abbasi initially pursued a career in finance before transitioning to filmmaking in 2010. He honed his craft by writing about Pakistani cinema and directing student shorts at the London Film Academy, marking his official debut as a writer and director of short films in 2012. Abbasi gained widespread critical acclaim with his debut feature film, "Cake," which he wrote and directed in 2018. The film premiered at West End, Leicester Square, and was Pakistan's official submission to the 91st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. He further solidified his reputation with the groundbreaking web series "Churails" (2020) and "Barzakh" (2024), both of which he wrote and directed. These projects are lauded for their progressive narratives, challenging societal norms, and featuring strong female characters, thereby marking a significant shift for Pakistani content in mainstream media. Through his production company, Indus Talkies, Asim Abbasi continues to focus on creating feature-length films and series that explore Pakistani and diaspora themes, bringing authentic and thought-provoking stories to a global audience.
